Event description

Description

You are invited to participate in a town hall on Tuesday 28 March 2017 from 7-9 PM at the Fogolar Furlan, Windsor organized by Windsor Law and the Windsor Law Refugee Sponsorship Group of 5.

Panelists will include: Lina Chaker (Syrian Canadian Council); Prof. Vasanthi Venkatesh (Windsor Law), John Rokakis (Rokakis Law); members of private sponsor groups and members of Syrian families seeking to sponsor family members still in danger in neighbouring countries. The event will be moderated by Professor Anneke Smit (Windsor Law). Members of the audience will be encouraged to participate in the conversation.

The town hall will be an opportunity to reflect on the following questions, among others: What are the effects of the federal government's processing backlog for private refugee applications? What does the cap on private sponsorship applications for Syrian and Iraqi refugees mean for our new Syrian refugee population in Windsor-Essex and reunification with their families? What is the future of Canada's private sponsorship program? Come and participate in the dialogue.

The town hall will also officially launch an open letter to Prime Minister Trudeau and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Hussen, which was drafted by 24 Windsor Law students and faculty, calling for improved action on refugee sponsorship. To date the letter has received 700 signatures.

This event will be of interest to Canadians seeking to sponsor their refugee family members, members of Group of 5 sponsor groups or donors to a sponsor group, people working in immigration and refugee law and settlement, community decision-makers who would like to understand more about the private sponsorship program, and other interested community members.

This event is free and open to the public. Arabic-English translation will be provided. This non-partisan event is sponsored by Cheryl Hardcastle, MP, Windsor-Tecumseh, who will be in attendance.
