About the Webinar & Speakers

Kate G. Burt, PhD, RDN, Jessica Hayes-Conroy, PhD, Elsa Esparza, RDN, MPH

This kickoff webinar introduces critical dietetics as a theoretical and practical framework for examining how power, history, and knowledge production shape dietetics education, research, and practice. Grounded in critical theory and food studies, the discussion will explore why these perspectives matter for contemporary nutrition work. Moderated by Kate G. Burt, PhD, RDN, Associate Professor at Lehman College (CUNY), the session will clarify what “critical” means in dietetics. Jessica Hayes-Conroy, PhD, Associate Professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will introduce key critical theories and analytic frameworks. Elsa Michelle Esparza, RD, MPH, Dietetic Internship Director at University of California, Berkeley, will discuss implications for education and practice.
