Event description

Description

Oki! (Hello),

In collaboration with Indigenous Resilience in Music (IRIM), Drum Beat productions, and the Arts Commons we will be hosting an electronic music workshop for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous youth, aged 29 and under. This is an initiative aimed to engage youth with electronic music as DJ’s, and/or producers while providing traditional knowledge in areas of the event to engage in preservation of culture. Our workshop will be on the weekend of Saturday, February 24, 2018 starting at 11:00 am to approximately 5:30 pm, during this time youth will engage in a panel discussion with the featured artists on their background, and experience in the music scene. At 12:30 pm, IRIM will lead a traditional music workshop on Indigenous transfers of knowledge through music, followed by a lunch for participants and volunteers. After lunch, participants will engage in breakout sessions with the featured artists which will give the student an opportunity to learn how to DJ from the artist themselves. The breakout sessions will be approximately 45-minutes long with open decks after the session where youth can test out their new found skills. Two breakout sessions will lead to the end of the event where artists and participants can visit and have a photo op.
