WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Join Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) and our partners with the Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) North Central Native Trout (NCNT) Recovery Program for a variety of plant harvesting and subsequent riparian restoration workdays. The purpose of these workdays is three-fold:

Harvest approximately 2000 live stakes of native willows for use in riparian restoration
Use harvested live willow stakes in restoration efforts at multiple sites along Rocky Creek, as part of a trail decommissioning and stream rehabilitation effort to protect important Bull Trout habitat in the Clearwater River watershed.
Engage the public in a meaningful restoration project and increase awareness about the status of native trout populations in Alberta, the challenges they face, and what is being done as part of the NCNT program to address these challenges.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Plant Harvesting Workday: March 25th 09:30 to 15:00

During the plant harvesting workdays, we will be harvesting native willows from a healthy and abundant stand on the Stainbrook Springs conservation property, managed by the Alberta Conservation Association who co-owns the property with Trout Unlimited Canada and Alberta Fish and Game Association. The goal of the two days will be to harvest as many willows as we can to reach our goal of approximately 2000 live willow stakes. These live stakes will be transported to a location to soak for a week or two prior to being planted along Rocky Creek! Riparian Restoration Workdays: Date and time TBD

During the riparian restoration workdays, we will be planting the live willow stakes harvested during the plant harvesting workdays. These workdays will take place in the back country away from cellular service, and will require a hike to the actual restoration sites. Please be prepared for this type of work if you plan to attend these workdays.

WHAT TO BRING

TUC and AEP will supply

Water and Coffee
Bag lunch for all volunteers
Gloves
Plant harvesting equipment
Riparian restoration equipment

Volunteers will need to bring

Warm layered clothing for all weather conditions
Shoes that can get dirty and wet, and are comfortable for a full day of outdoor work
Reusable water bottle and reusable mug
Sunglasses
Camera (if you'd like)

For the plant harvesting workdays, volunteers will meet at the Butte Community Hall north of Caroline at 09:30, we will then carpool to the Stainbrook Springs conservation property. For the riparian restoration events, volunteers will meet at the Clearwater Trading store and drive out to the Rocky Creek project staging area in a convoy, carpooling to the staging area is encouraged.
