Description
What is safeTALK?
safeTALK is a 3 hour alertness workshop that prepares participants, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper.
What are the Goals and Objectives of safeTALK?
- Recognize that invitations to help are often overlooked
- Move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss and avoid suicide
- Notice and respond to situations in which thoughts of suicide may be present
- Apply basic TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe)
What can I expect from safeTALK training?
Your safeTALK trainer will demonstrate the importance of suicide alertness and help you identify ways people invite help when they're at risk. safeTALK's steps provide a simple yet effective method to engage with people at risk and connect them with resouces that can carry our a full-scale intervention. At the end of the workshop, you'll have a chance to practice these skills firsthand. The training will be delivered by a WRDSB staff member and a parent who are both trained in safeTALK.
Is safeTALK training right for me?
Suicide has touched many of us personally. Please be aware that safeTALK training may bring up some strong emotions and passionate discussions. Our trainers are trained to handle these situations and to provide support to those who need it. About the organizer
WRAPSC is a parent-run committee that brings together school council representatives from across Waterloo Region to share ideas and work collaboratively to improve the effectiveness of school councils in the WRDSB. For this event, we are working with staff at the WRDSB Ed Centre, school staff and school council, and community partners from the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council and the Canadian Mental Health Association. Funding for this initiative was provided by the Ministry of Education through a Parent Reaching Out grant.
