Pacific herring, known as slhawt’ in the Skwxwú7mesh language are an environmentally and culturally significant fish. The MSI and Squamish Nation have partnered to conduct annual surveys for herring spawn (eggs) in northern Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound each year since 2021.

This program relies on the support of our community! We are recruiting volunteers to help us with the 2026 herring spawn survey season.

During the event on Jan 12th we will provide an overview of the program, details about the volunteer commitment, and will assign interested volunteers to sites around the Squamish Estuary.

Returning volunteers are not required to attend, but we ask that you sign up via email so that we can assign you to a site.

We hope to see you there! No experience is required, but we do ask that our volunteers have:

🚶‍♀️🚣 The ability to walk or paddle around an assigned area in and around the Squamish Estuary about once a week from February to the end of April.

📱 Access to an electronic device to submit data.

😄🐟 A positive attitude and enthusiasm for our favourite little fish!
