A breast cancer diagnosis comes with physical and emotional changes that can leave you with a complicated relationship with your body and sexual intimacy.

Changes in libido (your desire for sex) are one of the most common sexual complaints of women with Breast Cancer.

Breast Cancer can decrease sexual desire for a variety of reasons including hormonal changes; treatment side effects like nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue; medication side effects; non-sexual pain/discomfort, vaginal discomfort/pain; as well as difficulties with mental health and/or body image.

What makes a decrease in your sex drive feel even worse is the expectation that sexual desire should be spontaneous, and we are socialized to believe that “spontaneous desire” is the only healthy, normal way of experiencing desire. But did you know that for most women, sexual desire is primarily “responsive desire,” meaning women generally experience desire in response to stimuli or context?

In this workshop we will discuss the impact of Breast Cancer on sexual desire, introduce the circular model of sexual response and responsive desire, and help you develop a personalized template to better understand your accelerator and brake systems for sexual desire and response.

These group sessions are facilitated and moderated by a professionally trained, registered social worker, psychotherapist or licensed psychologist and provide that safe space to unpack what you’re feeling; to learn, share and connect with others.

Rethink’s psychosocial support program offers these virtual support group sessions to the community for free.
