SFU Café Scientifique - Collagen: More Than Just a Pretty Face!

Overview

Join Nancy Forde, physics professor, to learn about the many ways collagen supports the body's systems and functions, inside and out.

Although collagen is perhaps best known as a cosmetic product or nutritional supplement, its true importance lies in its dynamical scaffolding role in our bodies. Surprisingly, this thread-like protein building block is unstable at body temperature, yet it assembles into robust rope- and net-like structures that support diverse human tissues, from tendons, bones and cartilage to skin, kidneys and blood vessels. Viewing the properties of collagen through the lens of physics offers deeper insights into its dynamic biological functions. Join Nancy Forde, physics professor and Fellow of the American Physical Society, to learn more about this essential material.
