SFU Café Scientifique - Whence the Mountains? An Exploration of BC Geology
Overview
The awe-inspiring mountains of British Columbia are the result of nearly a billion years of geological change. Notably, for over 300 million years, oceanic crust of the Pacific basin has subducted beneath western North America, consuming vast amounts of ocean floor—nearly one-third of Earth’s circumference—adding new land to the continent, fueling volcanoes and major earthquakes, and creating one of the world’s most richly endowed critical mineral inventories. Join Earth Sciences professor Dan Gibson as he explores the geologic processes that formed one of Earth’s most impressive mountain systems and shaped the British Columbia we know today.here
