Event Details

What is Soldier For A Day (SFAD)?

The Soldier For A Day work-study program will show students and those interested in the Canadian Armed Forces Army Reserve how a soldier is trained and some of the things they do as part of the Canadian Armed Forces. Participants will be given the opportunity to see some of the equipment and vehicles used. They may also experience a portion of our annual fitness test and may receive basic instruction in marching and drill.

Participants will also get a closer look at the different educational and job opportunities offered by each of the following local Army Reserve units:

  • The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) – Infantry, Pipes and Drums Band;
  • 5th (BC) Field Artillery Regiment, RCA, 156 Battery – Artillery and Band;
  • 39 Service Battalion, 11 Service Company – Support (Cooks, drivers, mechanics, etc.);
  • 39 Signal Regiment, B Squadron 2 Troop – Communications.

Work-Study Program – Information for Students

The Army Reserve in BC has been offering a work-study program in various forms since 1996. In that time, over 1100 students from various secondary schools in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, and in the Fraser Valley, have participated in this program. Many students come back to participate in the program a second time and it has become a favourite event for participating instructors and of course, career counsellors are welcome.

The program is designed to be a fun way for students to gain work experience hours while learning more about the role of the Army Reserve both here in Canada and around the world.

 Space is limited, advance registration is encouraged and those who submit their application early stand a greater chance of participating in this event.

What is the Army Reserve?

The Army Reserve is made up of men and women who volunteer to serve part-time with the Canadian Armed Forces and learn valuable technical and leadership skills while also maintaining a regular civilian job or attending school full-time. There are over 1200 Reservists in BC and we are hiring. All uniforms, travel, and training are provided and you get paid when you work.

We train from September until May (similar to the school year), generally 1 evening a week in your home town and 1 weekend a month. There are full-time military courses and training during the summer (usually off of Vancouver Island) up to 4 summers of consecutive full-time employment offered. While most Reservists work part-time, there are opportunities to work full-time both within Canada and overseas depending on the individuals training level and availability.
