Queer Arts Festival 2019 with Amplified Opera and Theatre Gargantua
The Queen in Me
The Queen in Me explores conventional opera roles and their reliance on gender and sex stereotypes, and explodes traditional expectations of demure muses and femme fatales by turning opera on its head. Combining Mozart’s the Queen of the Night with original text and classical opera, the performance serves as a critique of the opera industry and a reimagining of what it could be. Created and performed by Teiya Kasahara, and directed by Andrea Donaldson. Presented by Amplified Opera and Theatre Gargantua.
“Every time that I’ve played the Queen of the Night I’ve felt so frustrated,” says soprano Teiya Kasahara 笠原貞野笠原貞野, creator and performer of The Queen in Me. “She has continued to be depicted as this two dimensional, very base portrayal, this evil woman, this evil character, this witch. To see the very black and white binary of it, very reduced binary, is completely frustrating because we’re not just one thing or the other, we’re not just black or white, so I wanted to give her a voice, I wanted to play with allowing her to come alive and actually tell her story..."
Two dates: June 21st and 22nd at 7pm.
Location: Roundhouse Performance Centre.
ASL interpretation will be provided.
