Event description

Description

“The Woods are Dark and Deep” is a new, original historical drama by Mladen Obradović, a Toronto-based theatre creator.

The script is based on a little known historical fact that during World War I, immigrants who were living in Canada, but who came from countries that Canada was in war with, ended up interned. This included Germans, Italians, Ukrainians, Croats, Serbs, Austrians, Hungarians, Turks.... More than 8500 people were kept in 24 internment camps and receiving stations. All of these camps were using their occupants as a working force to clear forests, create roads, national parks and villages, and most of them kept only men. However, there were two camps that kept entire families. Our story happens in one of those two- Spirit Lake Camp in northern Quebec. The story follows three Serbian men, who came to Canada from Lika, Croatia, so they had Austria-Hungary passports. The story also introduces us to a Ukrainian family, parents with two children, picked up and interned from Montreal, where they came to escape horrible hunger that was devastating their homeplace of Bukovina, Ukraine. All of these characters came to Canada to work and earn a better life for themselves and their families, but through no fault of their own ended up locked up and forced to do manual labour for several years, being payed a quarter a day.

A hundred years later, Canadian First World War Internment Recognition Fund is an organization that is dedicated to keeping the memory of these little-known events alive, and is hoping to educate our future generations about the position of immigrants in our country and the ordeals that they had to go through to integrate into the fabric of modern Canadian society. In collaboration with Pulse Theatre, they commissioned and produced this show that will educate, thrill and touch the audience, reminding them how tough were our ancestors and how their sacrifices informed our legal processes and our today's social freedoms.

The show is directed by Sandra Cradinal, a well renowned writer and director. Aiming for authenticity, our cast features immigrant performers, as well as actors of both Serbian and Ukrainian background. Beautiful Serbian traditional songs, an important part of the show's soundscape, are mentored by our amazing vocal coach, a Berkley graduate and an expert in Eastern European folk music- Kristina Bijelic. And the set and costume design is done by another exceptional artist, Meredith Wolting. With this stellar cast and crew, we can't wait for March 21st, when „The Woods are Dark and Deep“ will start it's run in Factory Theatre. We will have eight performances, till March 27th, and we do hope that you will come and see it.

The show is based on historical events and highly educational when it comes to Canadian history. However, our drama contains a few swearwords (d**n, h**l) and a fight/struggle scene between two male characters, so we do recommend parental discretion and advise it for children from grades 7 and up.

Cast: Dewey Stewart, Mladen Obradović, Jake Zabusky, Sophie McIntosh, Biljana Karadžić, Ratko Todorović, Fracesco de Francesco, Mila Jokić, Simeon Kljakić.
