  • 8:00 - Cultural Roundtable Response

Tributaries is an experimental video collage that documents narratives of the past and present of the City of New Westminster, and its central location along the banks of the Fraser River. The video acts as a scrapbook of sorts, with the intention of evoking a collective historical identity and a sense of place within the audience.

The title, Tributaries, references a river, but is more of a nod to the concept of paying tribute to a larger entity. Comprised of several short montages of local people, places and histories, the video as a whole represents a larger story of the area. It takes shape and flows, in a sense, like a river.

Using the resources available at the Fraser River Discovery Centre, The City of New Westminster Archives and the Anvil Centre, the breadth and heart of the video is based on local stories and mementoes of the past and present. The artwork reflects on "then and now" with an attempt to conjure a shared nostalgia amongst viewers. To view the work in progress, visit http://emiliecrewe.com/Tributaries.

Emilie Crewe (b. 1987, Quebec City, Canada) is an interdisciplinary artist working in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her artwork is exhibited internationally in galleries, museums, artist-run centres, experimental film/video festivals, and as public art. http://emiliecrewe.com/
