January is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) at SFU. This year, the focus is on workplace sexual harassment with the theme Empowering Equitable Workspaces.

Come join the SVSPO and their guests, Natalya Alonso and Harjap Grewal, for a thought-provoking event where we will be screening the documentary Nevertheless, followed by a discussion on workplace gender inequity and sexual harassment. This event aims to shed light on the systemic issues that perpetuate this problem and to spark meaningful conversations on how we can work towards more inclusive and equitable working environments.

Content Note:

Taking a look behind the headlines of #MeToo and Time's Up, Nevertheless follows the intimate stories of five individuals who have experienced and overcome sexual harassment in the workplace or at school. From a writer's assistant on a top TV show, to a tech CEO, to a 911 dispatcher, the film’s subjects spotlight the stories of survivors who are shifting our culture.

This 50-minute film includes dramatizations of the subjects' experiences of workplace sexual assault and harassment. In particular, the first ten minutes portrays a 911 dispatcher's experience of sexual assault (groping) by a co-worker. To learn more about the film, please visit this website. We invite all attendees of this event to participate in this event in ways that support their learning and well-being. An SVSPO case manager will be available to offer in-person personal support during the in-person event, and virtual support options will be available as well.

About Our Guest Speakers:

Natalya Alonso is an Assistant Professor in Management and Organization Studies at Beedie School of Business. She completed her PhD at the University of British Columbia. She works with organizations to solve problems related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly in traditionally male-dominated settings such as policing, information technology, and finance. Her research has been published in leading journals including Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Harjap Grewal is an Advocate and Policy Advisor working for the SFU Graduate Student Society. He has participated in many community spaces that have prioritized and practiced building cultures of consent, accountability, collective responsibility and restorative justice. His own practice is rooted in understanding the systemic and intersectional impacts of social, political and economic power.
