Book a Room!

We have made arrangements with the convention hotel (Sheraton Vancouver Airport) for a block of discounted room rates for event members which can be booked until SEPTEMBER 13, 2018.

Even if you live locally, with VCON 42 starting at 12 pm on Friday, programming running until late, Hospitality open until 1 am, and games running all night, booking a room for Friday and Saturday night ensures you have a private place to catch some shut-eye, or at least take a shower and put on some fresh clothes before breakfast each morning!

For more information about the venue and how to book a room, please visit www.vcon.ca/venue/

About VCON

VCON is the oldest volunteer-run general-interest science fiction, fantasy and gaming convention in Canada and the Pacific Northwest. The convention has promoted the interests of science fiction and fantasy culture in the metro Vancouver BC area since 1971, offering events, exhibits, presentations, discussions and workshops focused on a variety of Science Fiction and Fantasy fandom interest areas such as literature, art, media, music, costumes, comics, tabletop games, electronic games, etc. VCON's program is wide-ranging and inclusive of all fantastical and speculative fiction genres including hard science, high fantasy, anime, horror, alternate history or paranormal romance. New genres in new mediums have emerged constantly since 1971, and VCON embraces and promotes them all.

For more information about VCON, please visit www.vcon.ca.

About Canvention

Canvention is the Canadian national science fiction & fantasy convention sponsored by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA). It is the event where the year’s winners of the Aurora Awards and inductees into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame are announced. Every year Canvention is hosted by a different convention somewhere in Canada; in 2018 Canvention 38 will be held in conjunction with VCON 42, in the Vancouver, BC metropolitan area.

The Aurora Awards and the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame recognize the best in Canadian science fiction and fantasy literary works, artworks, and fan activities. Eligible works and individuals are nominated and winners are chosen by CSFFA members (annual membership is open to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents).

For more information about the Aurora Awards, please visit prixaurorawards.ca/home/about/about-the-aurora-awards/.

About WCSFA

VCON is presented by the West Coast Science Fiction Association — a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and understanding of science fiction, fantasy and gaming fan culture in the Vancouver metro region. VCON is organized by a WCSFA subcommittee and is not, nor will it ever be, owned by a big business or corporation. For now and for as long as efforts continue VCON will be a convention built "For the Fans, By the Fans".

FAQs

What's all this about buying a membership?

The organization that hosts VCON - the West Coast Science Fiction Association (WCSFA) - is a 100% volunteer-run organization and a BC registered non-profit. WCSFA sells memberships to its major events (such as VCON) rather than tickets and attendees also become members of WCSFA, with $5 of the event membership fee going to support WCSFA directly.

As a result, VCON and WCSFA's other major events are not just "run by the fans for the fans" but are run specifically by and for WCSFA's very own members. Each event membership purchased represents that member's support commitment towards the operational costs that must be met for the organization to successfully run that event.

All WCSFA members are eligible to

  • take a $5 discount at any membership supported WCSFA event until their membership expires.
  • earn discounts or special deals at partnered local businesses.
  • attend and vote at WCSFA General Meetings (13 years or older)
  • run for election to the WCSFA Board of Directors (18 years or older).
  • head up the organization committee for a major WCSFA event (18 years or older).

Is my registration transferrable?

Yes, VCON registration (and the event memberships associated with them) are transferable (that is, you can give or sell them to someone else if you will not be able to attend).

To transfer your event membership to someone else prior to the end of online membership sales, send an email to the VCON Registration at registration@vcon.ca with the full name and email address of both the person who originally registered and the person it should be transferred to. The Secretary will follow up with both of you to update the registration record with other information.

After online registration has closed, to transfer your event membership you must provide the person you want to transfer it to with a signed note that includes the full name and email address of both yourself and the person it should be transferred to. This note must be brought, along with valid ID, to the VCON registration desk where the registration information will be updated and a badge will be created for them.

Note that transferring your event membership does NOT transfer the WCSFA membership portion of the registration. That is, the original member will already have gained a new WCSFA membership or had the expiry date extended for an existing one and this will not be reversed.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes. Send an email to the WCSFA Secretary at registration@vcon.ca with your full name and the email address used to register the membership to request changes.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, physical tickets are not issued and are not required for this event. Instead, just show up at the Pre-Registration Pickup desk and present a valid photo ID to claim your membership badge.

The Pre-Registration Pickup desk should be open during the following hours:

SAT: 9:30A - 8:00P
SUN: 9:30A - 2:00P

Outside of these hours, you will be able to pick up your membership badge from the convention's Operations Room. (Directions to its location will be provided at the venue.)

What is the refund policy?

Because each purchased membership represents a commitment to support the operation of the event, memberships are not refundable. However, they are transferable (that is, you can give or sell your membership to someone else if you can't attend the event). See the answer to the "Is my registration transferrable?" FAQ for details of how to transfer a membership.
