As part of our WaterTalk lecture series Kevin Boyle, professor of agricultural and applied economics and director of the Program in Real Estate at Virginia Tech, presents, " From the Exxon Valdez to the BP Deep Water Horizon Oil Spills: A story of economic damages from four major environmental contamination events."

This talk will discuss efforts to measure the Economic Damages from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Oklahoma poultry non-point source pollution and the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. I will discuss the challenges of linking natural and social sciences in the damage assessments, the legal/political challenges and resolution in these cases. I will also present details of the BP damages assessment, which use the best contemporary methods to estimate economic damages from an environmental insult to the environment.

About the speaker

Kevin Boyle is professor of agricultural and applied economics and director of the Program in Real Estate at Virginia Tech. He is an international leader in the development and application of the estimation of values for environmental and ecosystem services that do not have market prices. He is a co-editor of A Primer on Nonmarket Valuation and a co-author of the recent Science paper on the damages from the BP Deep Water Horizon oil spill. He currently serves on the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board Environmental Economics Advisory Committee and the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee Particulate Matter Review Panel.
