Description

What is the Wetland Education Network?

The Wetland Education Network (WEN) is a project of the Alberta North American Waterfowl Management Plan (AB NAWMP) Partnership. WEN brings together individuals and organizations representing four sectors: Agriculture, Municipalities, Education/Public and Industry to consider how to advance wetland education, knowledge and action in Alberta. The sector Action Groups have been working together for the past year to determine tools and resources to support wetland education in Alberta.

Who should come to this workshop?

Whether you have been involved with the network since the pilot phase or want to learn more, this workshop is for you. Do you work with any of the four sectors listed above and are interested in how to reach them with information about the wetland policy, wetland conservation or general wetland appreciation and connection? This workshop is for you!

During this full day, you will come away with ideas, new knowledge and motivation to educate about wetlands in Alberta.

Registration is free and includes lunch.

Registration deadline: March 11, 2019

Information is not Enough: Reaching Audiences with Sticky Science Communication

Matthew Pyper of Fuse Consulting

If you could reach a new audience with one message about wetlands, what would it be? Would it be a message with numbers to convey the urgency of wetland conservation? Or maybe statistics to influence a provincial policy maker? When we think about communicating the science of wetlands, many—maybe even most—of us think about information. Data. Statistics. However, research has shown us that science communication depends on far more than just information. It depends on the ability to evoke the emotions of those we are trying to reach. It requires connecting at a personal level. In this talk, I will showcase three examples of how anyone can help make the science of wetlands stick. Whether reaching the public, operators, or policy makers, we will explore how these techniques have helped make science sticky.
