TREE TALK: Why Trees Fail and How to Keep Them Healthy
On Monday December 3, join expert arborists for an inspiring and practical talk on protecting our trees, our property, and the health benefits of our urban forest — today and for the future. Presented jointly by the Annex and Harbord Village Residents’ Associations, the talk will highlight the results from two extensive community-led tree surveys. The Harbord Village and Annex neighbourhoods, combined, are home to nearly 15,000 trees, providing residents with cleaner air and less intense heat, and supporting a valuable carbon sink for Toronto and the region. But storms and other effects of climate change, along with construction and soil compaction, are taking a worsening toll on our trees, especially our largest (and most ecologically valuable) specimens.
Professional arborists from Cohen and Master Tree Services will offer their knowledge and advice on safeguarding and monitoring tree health, such as learning the signs that a tree (or branch) is at risk. Early detection and intervention can avert costly property damage and keep us all safer. Documentary images of recent tree losses will provide insights as to how damage might be mitigated in future storms.
The talk will also cover the importance of planting more, and replacement, trees, and how residents might acquire trees for their properties. Time will be set aside for audience questions.
The event will take place at 918 Bathurst Street (just north of Barton) at 7 pm. Admission is free. Seating is limited.
