FALLING IN LOVE: THE ART OF RELATIONSHIPS IN SOCIAL PRACTICE
FRIDAY OCTOBER 16, 2020 AT 1:00
FREE - EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
Join Dawn Matheson, a Guelph-based interdisciplinary artist working in video, audio, print and performance, as she talks about cultivating trust, friendship and intimacy in her collaborative projects. For 20 years, she has partnered with communities considered marginalized through disability and difference, with seniors, children, musicians, academics, high-risk youth, new Canadians, special needs groups, adult literacy learners, and Deaf youth.
Through inclusive artistic practices, Dawn seeks to interrupt civic and social spaceswith unexpected moments of beauty, curiosity and joy. Her relational performances and interventions hope to offer moments of exuberance and liberation from everyday suffering and to dismantle barriers between individuals by creating alternative stories that build compassion and kinship. But none of this is possible without fostering authentic relationships built on respect, openness, imagination, vulnerability and trust.
Attendees: Please bring your experiences, questions and challenges from your own inclusive and collaborative practices for an open conversation after the lecture Dawn's work has been featured at CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener + Area), SummerWorks, Hot Docs cinema, The International Deaf Film and Arts Festival, the Gladstone, Nuit Blanche (Toronto), University of Guelph, Guelph Jazz Festival, Stratford Festival, Waterloo Amplify Conference, Milton Centre for the Arts, CBC Radio (documentary), Ed Video, Art Gallery of Guelph, cinemas, conferences, plus in public locations such as train stations, fountains, bath houses and alleyways throughout Canada.
