About this event

  • 1 hour

"A Smoke Behind the Rope" draws inspiration from actual events and characters, shedding light on political activists' ongoing struggle, imprisonment and torture. It is the story of two young individuals (Farhad and Gulnaz) confined to separate cells. A curious interaction ensues when Farhad accidentally strikes the wall, prompting Gulnaz to respond quickly upon hearing the noise. This action initiates a unique form of communication as they take turns hitting the wall, gradually forming a connection through rhythmic exchanges. This rhythmical tapping on the walls between them leads to a dance. The wall between them disappears as they continue dancing, and we learn about their lives, relationships, and struggles.

It's a tale of two individuals finding a way to connect, even in the most challenging circumstances. Through their rhythmic interactions, they can forge a bond that transcends the physical barriers between them. This recurring theme of the wall appearing and disappearing represents the enduring resilience and growing solidarity between the two individuals as they navigate a precarious environment. Despite their challenging circumstances, they can find love, humour and hope, which helps them overcome the oppression they experience.

Through the characters' interactions, movements, voices, and emotions, the play portrays a generation of immigrants grappling with trauma and striving for a brighter future before being forced to leave their home country.

Through the poignant stories of Golnaz and Farhad, the play sheds light on the plight of marginalized and oppressed groups like the Kurds and the impact of oppressive regimes. It underscores the universal themes of love, resilience, and human connection. With a blend of physical movements, dialogues, songs, and moments of silence, the performance delves into the lives of Farhad and Golnaz to illuminate the struggle of political activists under oppressive regimes.
