This training workshop addresses all codes and Canadian references required by the API 1169 Exam. The content focuses on the role of the inspector as the client (owner) representative, and provides a thorough understanding of the various codes and regulatory requirements necessary for the inspector to fulfill their role. This includes various aspects of site safety, environmental protection, pipeline construction & inspection, and the administrative requirements deemed necessary to assure that the new pipeline construction fully satisfies the owner’s requirements as well as the local, federal and provincial regulatory requirements.

Benefits of Training with Skystone

Skystone’s instructors have many years of hands on experience in all facets of pipeline design, fabrication, installation, and inspection.  As the leading provider of pipeline and pressure equipment integrity management services, we’re in the perfect position to provide a significant amount of added value beyond just basic requirement of pipeline construction inspection:  information on best practices and practical interpretation and application of the various inspection tasks required.

General Quality Principles

  • Basic Inspection Principles (e.g., MOC, inspection roles and responsibilities)
  • Records Management (e.g., legibility, traceability and retention)
  • Document Control (Revision Status)
  • Non-Conformance Handling (e.g., reporting, disposition and corrective & preventative actions)
  • Root Cause Analysis
  • Calibration – Monitoring and Measurement Equipment Control
  • Material Preservation and Handling (e.g., tagging and identifications)

Pipeline Construction Inspection

  • Clearing and Grading (e.g., alignment sheets, specifications and permits)
  • Ditching (e.g., depth of cover, specifications and landlord restrictions)
  • Stringing (e.g., materials identifications, materials defects and pipe tally)
  • Pipe Bending (Pipe Ovality and Wrinkles, Proper Bending … etc.)
  • Coating Basics
  • Welding Basics
  • Lowering-In (e.g., proper equipment, specifications, lifting plans and reporting)
  • Backfill (e.g., proper equipment, padding pipe and buoyancy placement)
  • Tie-in’s (e.g., materials placement and identification)
  • Pressure Testing (e.g., specifications, pressure testing equipment, dewatering and leak identification and repairs)
  • Cathodic Protection (e.g., alignment sheets, specification and reporting)
  • Clean-Up (e.g., bank stabilization, re-vegetation and mile marker placement)
  • As-Builts (e.g., redline drawings, NDE logs/maps, depth of cover and test leads)
  • Horizontal Directional Drilling (
  • Bores, Road Crossing, Foreign Utility Crossings (e.g., clearances, crossing permits and cased vs. uncased)

Pipeline Line Construction Safety

  • Overall/Basic Safety (e.g., OSHA Regulations 1910, Rigging Protocols, JSA, HAZCOM, PPE … etc.)
  • Confined Space (e.g., entry permits, fire watch, gas detectors and respiratory requirement)
  • Elevated Work Surface (e.g., ladder safety, fall arrest and hand rails)
  • Excavation (e.g., CGA, INGAA, spoil pile placement, one call and traffic control)
  • Pressure testing (e.g., minimum distance, test equipment failure and running dryer pigs)
  • Welding (e.g., arch flashes, fire hazards and propane hazards)
  • Coating (e.g., flammable materials and respiratory concerns)
  • Non Destructive Examination (NDE)

Pipeline Construction Environmental Protection

  • Environmental Protection Plan
  • Waste Handling, Soil Handling
  • Erosion Control
  • Documentation Requirement
  • Ground Water and Storm Water Handling
  • Upland and Wetland Requirement
  • Bank Stabilization Techniques
  • Notification Requirements (Spill, Incident, Landlord Interaction and Notifications Protocols)
  • Horizontal Directional Drilling
  • Environmental Hazards
  • Water Intake, Use and Discharge Requirements
