Join us for a rare heavy metal spectacle at the Dakota Tavern as we kick off the Ashes of the Void Tour! This opening show features an intense lineup of metal bands ready to deliver a night of powerful, ground-shaking performances.

Headlining the night are Voidchaser (Montreal and Stockholm) and Ashbreather (Montreal), bringing their unique combination of progressive death and sludge metal to the forefront. They are joined by the progressive metal band The Aphelion (Ottawa), and PYRES (Toronto), known for their hardcore rock genre. This diverse mix of progressive metal, sludge metal, hardcore, and death metal provides a perfect snapshot of the contemporary metal scene.

About the bands

VOIDCHASER is a progressive death metal band based in Montreal and Stockholm, established just last year. This past February, they released their debut EP, Odyssey, which blends various metal genres within a compelling sci-fi narrative. Drawing inspiration from bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, and Between the Buried and Me, Voidchaser offers a distinctive musical experience that defies genre norms. Their single "Tyrant," recently remixed and remastered, quickly gained substantial attention across multiple platforms just a few weeks after its release. Voidchaser’s music combines complex compositions with innovative sounds, creating tracks that are both heavy and catchy, as well as violent and romantic, appealing to fans of sophisticated, genre-blending metal.

Formed in December 2016, ASHBREATHER emerged from the ashes of The Wild Hunt, bringing together a powerful blend of progressive sludge and death metal. The band started as a larger ensemble but refined its lineup to a trio in January 2021, with each member now sharing vocal duties and experimenting with non-traditional instruments to enhance their sound. In November 2022, Ashbreather released their ambitious project, Hivemind. This 37-minute monolithic song showcases their ability to weave complex compositions with experimental flair, marking a significant milestone in their musical journey. Witness Ashbreather's innovative approach to metal, where they push the boundaries of genre and redefine the auditory experience with every performance.

THE APHELION, a hard-hitting progressive metal band from Ottawa, formed in 2015, features Evan Haydon-Selkirk (lead vocals, bass, keyboards), James Cabral (guitar, keyboards), Tyler Davis (guitar, backing vocals), and Nathanael Livingstone (drums). Known for their theatrical live shows that emphasize audience interaction and musical virtuosity, the band blends dramatic flair and emotional depth with unexpected genre shifts, creating a unique sound and strong stage presence. Their forthcoming double album, Nascence and Senescence, continues to explore philosophical themes and the human condition, reminiscent of their narrative approach in the 2018 album The Labour Division. Having shared the stage with bands like Protest the Hero and Alestorm, The Aphelion are expanding their reach, resonating deeply with fans across the globe.

Formed in Toronto in 2011, PYRES forge a potent blend of sludge metal and hardcore, while injecting their sound with urgent strands of punk, the tonality of doom, and the guitar harmonies of Thin Lizzy-era rock and heavy metal. All baked into the hook-laden, efficient song structures of grunge. 2013’s Year Of Sleep privileged the band with widespread acclaim from rock and metal publications like Decibel, Rock-A-Rolla, and Terrorizer, while coverage from online sources such as NPR, Pop Matters, Metal Bandcamp, Echoes and Dust, Hellbound.ca and Ghost Cult Mag hailed Year Of Sleep as a “near perfect debut”. Following a longer-than-anticipated hiatus due to the Covid 19 pandemic, as well as the recruitment of new personnel , PYRES are back in studio throughout Q1 2024, with work heavily underway for their sophomore LP.
