About this event

Important Notice: Course dates are Thursdays, April 11 - June 13, 2024, 6 PM - 9 PM

All classes are online via Zoom

Eligibility: This course is open to ages 16+

This 10-week course is the eighth in the series of American Sign Language classes. In the Deaf community telling stories is a way of talking. In this final course in the Signing Naturally series, students analyze how “key elements” are used in ASL storytelling and become familiar with strategies used to adapt written stories into ASL. Upon completion of this course, students will tell stories effectively using learned strategies.

Pre-requisite:

Successful completion of ASL 303 or recommendation by way of a placement test.

A “no-voice” teaching method is used to reinforce the learning experience. You'll learn through virtual classroom instruction and role-play, as well as videotext and a workbook. The videotext and workbook supplement and reinforce the virtual classroom instruction so you can review, practice and retain what you learn.

Our qualified Deaf instructors use Signing Naturally, a sign language curriculum that teaches both ASL and Deaf culture to help you better understand the communication needs of the Deaf community.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: please register as soon as possible to avoid course cancellations due to insufficient registrations. In some cases, we may reduce the number of course hours to accommodate smaller registration numbers. We do this so that the course can continue for the benefit of our student’s progress. If there is a change, we will notify you.

CLASS CANCELLATION PROTOCOL:

Class Cancellation Protocol: notifications will be sent by email by 3 PM on the day of cancellation, with a request to acknowledge receipt. In cases where an acknowledgment is not received, a follow-up phone call will be made. Please check your email, and voice mail and ensure that the office has your updated email and phone numbers. A make-up date will be added at the end of the schedule. A class missed by a student cannot be made up at any other time or in any other session. Tutoring services are available by contacting the office and the fee is $50 per hour.

Note that no refund or returns are permitted on student materials after they have been delivered to the student. Please email asleducation@chs.ca for more information.
