MORE ABOUT VanVogueJam Arts Society (VVJ)

VVJ is a Vancouver based non-profit organization helping to support and build the Ballroom scene within Vancouver, BC, and Canada. Founded in 2017, VVJ officially became a non-profit in British Columbia in November 2019. By facilitating by-donation/free and open-to-all weekly Ballroom education classes and Ballroom events, VVJ seeks to help build a culture of creativity, community, expression and accessibility and safety of Queer, Trans, Black, and People of Color (QTBIPOC) at its core.

Ballroom was founded by the Black, Trans, Latinx and Queer communities of Harlem (NYC), and at VVJ we respect and honor this foundation and extend this to the diverse QTBIPOC spectrum to further the message of diversity in the culture as we carve space for all bodies to come together. We see Ballroom as a way to connect and create a healthier and more connected queer community through the global connections we bring - in turn creating stronger community bonding locally. VVJ staff and instructors and the majority of its board members are members/and or allies of the LGBTQIA2S+ BIPOC community, and is reflected by the participants of our classes and events. We continue building new leaders, and staff for our organization and community through integrated mentorship - further investing in the future and legacy of Ballroom in the city.

    LUMINESQUE

Luminesque Dance, owned and operated by Glow Studios Inc., is a heels dance training and performance program. We were founded in Vancouver, and operate in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Squamish, and Victoria.

We provide expertly-designed heels dance training and productions that explore and celebrate underrepresented expressions of self and sexuality.

We hope that by providing accessible space in our studios and on stage to safely express sexuality, agency, identity, power, and confidence - we work together to dismantle the sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, ageism and ableism that makes us feel like we’re anything less than brilliant.

We believe that when we all radiate confidence in our bodies, minds and souls, we serve as shining examples that spread joy and empowerment to our loved ones and communities - thus making the world a better, brighter place for all. We affectionately call this positive impact “the glow”.

    SOILUVA

Dancing instructor and founder Soile Weaver grew up in Finland. She knew her name ‘Soile’ had something to do with the Northern Lights, a phenomenon often seen during Finland’s dark winters. Looking for a company name she discovered that Soile originated from the term Soiluva (pronounced Soy-Luva) which more specifically meant; the wave like movements of the Northern Lights. The connection to her life was obvious as she could see the same movement represented in the motion of dance!
