Event description

Description

Bent River Records is kicking off its official inauguration with a celebratory launch party and concert, April 6, 2017, 7-10 pm at the John L. Haar Theatre, MacEwan University’s Jasper Place campus. The launch party coincides with the end of the winter semester, making it one of the last big events to take place at the arts campus, which is moving to its new downtown location for fall 2017. Performances by Mallory Chipman, The Obsessions Octet and Acid Bunny.

Mallory Chipman celebrated the debut of her first recording, Nocturnalize, in November 2016, but she’s no newcomer to the music scene. The MacEwan University instructor teaches voice and has performed with such artists as PJ Perry, Tommy Banks, and has sung backup vocals for Heart.

In 2016 the label produced MacEwan University Assistant Professor and Artistic Director of the Edmonton International Jazz Festival Kent Sangster’s Obsessions Octet’s third release, Steppin’ Up. A previous recording, Obsession, won the Western Canadian Music Award (WCMA) for Jazz Recording of the Year and was nominated for a JUNO, while Melodia also received a WCMA nomination.

Montreal’s Acid Bunny recorded High School Fantasy in 2009 – the title alone, tells us this is no ordinary jazz CD. Acid Bunny’s release is the first CD project that was conceived and produced entirely by MacEwan’s label using an artist share model, and provided collaboration with faculty of several of Montreal’s top learning institiutions.

Bar at 6 pm. Doors at 6:30 pm. Music at 7-10 pm.
