What to Expect:

Birding 101 consists of four engaging online classes and four exciting in-person sessions led by experienced birders. In the online classes, you'll start from the basics, learning about essential equipment and techniques for birding. From there, we'll delve into the fascinating world of bird identification, covering common species and helpful tips for spotting them.


Online Classes:

  1. Introduction to Birding Essentials: Learn about birding ethics, essential equipment and field guides.
  2. Bird Identification Basics: Learn about size, shape, field marks, and bills.
  3. Exploring Birding Behaviours: Explore the curious world of bird behaviours to help you become a better birder.
  4. Where to find birds: Dive deeper into location strategies to help you find more birds.


In-Person Sessions:

  1. Field Trip to Carburn Park: One of Calgary's "birdiest" spots a great place to learn new skills.
  2. Field Trip to Dale Hodges Park: Wetlands are full of diverse bird life. Learn how to spot it.
  3. Field Trip to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary: Discover urban birding at its finest in this serene sanctuary.
  4. Field Trip to Griffith Woods Park: A more challenging environment that will put your birding skills to the test.

Spaces for in-person sessions are limited, so be sure to secure your spot early. Participants must bring their own binoculars for the in-person sessions.

  • The pathways are generally flat. Some pathways are unpaved but they are well compacted.

Can I attend individual sessions or do I need to attend all sessions?

While we encourage participants to attend all sessions for a comprehensive learning experience, you're welcome to attend individual sessions based on your availability and interest. All online sessions are taped and can be viewed at a later date.

Can I participate if I don't have binoculars?

Yes! We have binoculars that you can borrow. Just make sure the check off that you need to borrow them.

Will there be opportunities to ask questions and interact with instructors?

Yes, there will be opportunities to ask questions and interact with instructors during both the online classes and in-person sessions. Our experienced birders are here to support and guide you throughout your birding journey.

Who is Birding 101 for?

Birding 101 is perfect for beginners, curious bird enthusiasts, and anyone eager to improve their birding skills. Whether you're completely new to birding or looking to enhance your knowledge, this course offers something for everyone.

Can I bring my dog to the in-person sessions?

We kindly ask that participants refrain from bringing their dogs to the in-person sessions of Birding 101. While we love our furry friends, having dogs present during birding outings can potentially disrupt the wildlife we're observing and may affect the experience for other participants. Additional

I have mobility issues and can't walk on rough terrain. Can I still participate?

We strive to make Birding 101 accessible to all participants, including those with mobility issues. Some of our in-person sessions involve walking on uneven terrain. Please contact us at communication@naturecalgary.com to discuss your concerns.

Can children participate?
