About this event

This event will include the sharing of the history of both henna and Cree Syllabics. Participants will get the opportunity to learn about two cultural practices and engage in both of them by practicing use of the henna cone while writing words in Cree Syllabics.

The event will take place in the Arts Building Room 213. Food will be served from 5:00-5:30pm. Everyone is welcome!

This event will be led by Nirmal Zeeshan and Randy Morin.

Nirmal Zeeshan is the proud owner and artist at Nirmal’s Henna Tattoos which is located in Saskatoon and has been open since 2011. She is from Pakistan and brings the magic of 100% organic henna tattoos to a wide range of occasions, making each one unforgettable and uniquely meaningful. Her journey with henna began with a fascination for its intricate designs. Her goal is to establish a henna lounge/studio, a place where people can gather with friends and family, relax, and enjoy henna tattoos.

Randy Morin is from the Big River First Nation, located on Treaty 6 territory in central Saskatchewan but currently lives in Saskatoon where he is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. He continues to work in the field of language revitalization and reclamation working on many research projects with various colleges within the university and with other organizations throughout the province and across Canada. Randy has also helped to create 2 Cree Apps and is also writing his 5th Childrens book. He is currently working on a new children’s animation series called Chums that will be available in Cree and English. Randy is a father of 3 children and enjoys spending time with them by practicing and living traditional Plains Cree ceremonies and traditions. He holds Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Regina, a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan, and a Master’s Degree in Language revitalization from the University of Victoria.

This is presented by Building Bridges, a program coordinated by the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre and the International Student and Study Abroad Centre (ISSAC).
