Event description

Description

We’re inviting persons with dementia, informal and unpaid caregivers, families, and friends to come together for a lively, interactive afternoon of idea sharing! Together, we will discuss how to integrate research into the continuum of dementia diagnosis and care, including ways to involve you, as important community members, in research opportunities here on Vancouver Island.

We are excited to share that two special guests will be joining us: Maria Howard, Chief Executive Officer of the Alzheimer Society of BC, and Isobel Mackenzie, BC’s Seniors Advocate!

The motivation to host this community dialogue stems from the offfical announcement made by the Victoria Hospital Foundation in early October to honour Mr. and Mrs. Neil Manning. The Mannings, formerly from Alberta and who are now Victoria residents, pledged 2.5 million dollars for dementia research in a 5-year initiative known as the Neil and Susan Manning Cognitive Health Initiative. Over the five years, CHI researchers and doctors aim to improve the diagnosis and treatment of dementia on Vancouver Island through the development of a ‘learning healthcare system’ and digital tools. The Vancouver Island Centre is working closely with the CHI partners, including UVic’s Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health to organize this event.

I work in a health care setting and/or in an organization providing formal care and support for individuals with dementia. Can I attend this event?

Your perspectives and experiences on this topic are important to capture, however the objective of this session is to hear from individuals with dementia, their families, and friends. We hope to host future engagement opportunities where your unique vantage point will be sought. Thank you for understanding.
