Ecstatic Dance is a part of a larger movement known as Conscious Dance, a modern form based on ancient principles of movement, self-expression and self-realization.

It goes well beyond dance and entertainment and is a practice that combines the fun and freedom of moving however you feel along with mindfulness and personal exploration to promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

It can be lightly facilitated or guided with great intention to build deep awareness & inquiry.

Based on 5 Rhythms and community dances held in Hawaii that brought in DJ based music, Ecstatic Dance is a freeform dance experience that places a strong emphasis on creating a safe space for the dancers.

Within this safe space, the dancers are free to dive into their personal processes while also following the trajectory of the music and collective energy that is co-created. The dance progresses from warm-up to peak and back again.

The DJ’s role in ecstatic dance is to create a seamless flow of music to facilitate trance-like states, as well as bringing ‘surprises’ to the dancefloor. Key skills include traditional tools such as beatmatching, transitions, using effects, and reading the energy of the crowd. Further topics include understanding music and genres, creating effective playlists, and curating an arc through different styles of music such as downtempo, tribal-house, and lyrical, allowing the dancers to connect to a wide range of emotions.

Ecstatic Dance is a part of a larger burgeoning movement known as Conscious Dance, a modern practice based on ancient principles of movement, self-expression and self-realization.
