Dying, Death and Loss Through a Socially Just Lens

PRESENTER: Keri-Lyn Durant, PhD

Keri-Lyn Durant has a PhD in Dying, Death, and Loss education. In addition to the research she does with Lakehead University, she has designed and now delivers a course in Social Justice Education.

Please consider joining us to explore dying, death, and loss in terms of social justice, in general, and the following in particular, for example:

● Why the term White should always be capitalised;

● The importance of dominant and oppressed group identification in service provision;

● Why cultural competence is no longer the goal in a diverse society;

● The role of self-awareness in socially just service provision;

● A socially just approach is appropriate to everyone we serve.

This interactive workshop aims to provide a platform to share, unpack, discuss, and challenge the responsibilities of service providers in our diverse communities in 21st century Canada

ABOUT KERI-LYN DURANT, PhD

Keri-Lyn Durant, PhD Education, is Research Project Lead on the SSHRC Insight

Research Grant and co-host of the podcast Disrupting Death. She is a researcher at

Lakehead University and supply teacher with Bluewater District School Board and

lives in Wiarton, Ontario.

Keri-Lyn is also a passionate educator, particularly keen to support ‘littles’ in elementary school as they face ongoing grief-related and socioemotional challenges brought on by the pandemic. She gets to work with a puppet, Phoebe the Sloth, using play to meet and explore grief with tiny griefsters on their level.

Keri-Lyn’s background in applied theatre sparked a desire to learn more about digital storytelling and podcasting; she gratefully studied both through The Story Center (Berkeley, CA) and hones her craft teaching teacher candidates how to use both tools in their own classrooms.

Her research interests include how people, especially children and adolescents, navigate grief experiences, medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada, and the programming and delivery of grief camps across Canada.

In her spare time, Keri-Lyn prefers to be outdoors, especially with her wife, Paula, and dogs, Frank & Nitro.
