As part of Jane's Walk Toronto 2024 weekend, Lost Rivers, City Forest and Save Ontario's Science Centre invite you to join our walk.

The provincial government plans to demolish and relocate the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place.

Our walk led by arborist Todd Irvine of City Forest and ravine advocate Floyd Ruskin of Lost Rivers Toronto, is planned to bring much needed attention and scrutiny to the ill-advised plans of the Ford government.

Architect Ray Moriyama designed a remarkable building embraced by visitors for over 50 years. Working with Chief Designer Taizo Miake, instead of a traditional museum building filled with objects, they created one of the world’s first interactive science centres.

The complex was specifically built for its site, responding to the changing levels of the Don River ravine and creating a unique relationship between building, landscape and nature. According to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the land is " unsuitable" for any kind of housing owing to its proximity to a ravine and the wildlife that use the area for nesting. The area immediately surrounding the Science Centre includes the Don River, ravine lands, sensitive habitats, floodplain designation, trees and watercourses.

Tearing down the OSC structures and trashing its building materials as landfill is a luxury that Canada can no longer afford. The climate emergency and rapid biodiversity loss may be the most pressing issues of our time, so decisions about the future of every existing building needs careful scrutiny.

Just imagine the disastrous environmental impact demolishing the OSC will have on the ravine, trees, wildlife and nearby park use.

This will be an interactive walk with lots of opportunity for discussion.
