Description of event

This is a community event to hear about and discuss a new film project produced by Sarah Jones. The film centres the point of view and artistic practice of Frank Hull - dance artist, choreographer and activist who proudly lives with cerebral palsy and madness, embraces his Mi'kmaq heritage, and celebrates his gay identity. The film will combine cinema verite, interviews, POV footage and choreographed contemporary dance to explore the themes of beauty, diversity and disability.

The evening will start with socializing and refreshments followed by a screening of the very first interview with Sarah and Frank that planted the seed for the current film project ‘Own Kind of Beautiful’, scheduled to be produced in September and released in December of this year. Plus the short film 'be.yond' that was created as support material for funding applications. Then a question and answer discussion with Sarah and Frank, more time to socialize and connect with each other plus music and dancing!

A passion project many years in the making, hear more about the film, who is involved and how you can be a part of it!

Ticket info

All ticket sales will go towards the first phase of production that includes filming rehearsals with Frank and his long time dance partner and friend Marcie from New York. There are tiered price levels for tickets so please pay what you can comfortably afford. Other ways that can help support this project is to share the event with your friends, family and on your social media platforms.

Location info

The evening takes place at the longest running 2SLGBTQ+ book store in the world, Glad Day Bookshop in the heart of the Church Wellesley Village in Toronto. Glad Day Bookshop is located at 499 Church St, Toronto, ON M4Y 2C6.

Accessibility info

The closest subway stop that has an elevator is the Wellesley station at Yonge/University line which is 4 blocks away from Glad Day Bookshop. The entrance to Glad Day Bookshop is wheelchair accessible in terms of width and it is level to the street (no stairs, no lip) but there is not an automatic door. There is a single stall washroom on the main level and it is very large. The sink and toilet are at AODA heights. It does not have an automatic door or any motion sensors. The space is quite large and many mobility devices can be in the space at once and maneuver through the space. Some of the staff are proficient in ASL and many speak languages other than English.

Organized by

Hi I’m Sarah and I am an award-winning, independent filmmaker. I create documentaries that use contemporary dance to illustrate stories of connection and belonging; to ourselves, to others and to our environment. I work with and am a member of the disabled, neurodiverse, 2SLGBTQ+ and contemporary dance communities.

My first film ‘Contested Landscapes’ is a commentary on urban development within the protected land of the Oak Ridges Moraine and won an Audience Choice Award at the Contact Dance International Film Festival (CDIFF) in 2017. The films that followed include ‘bacK’ a personal story of power imbalances on-and-off of the dance floor, ‘Parcon Resilience’ an introduction to a somatic movement practice that is BIPOC centered and ‘Climate Strike Contact’ that illustrates a variety of ways to protest climate injustice including the embodied dance practice of Contact Improvisation.

I screened and released my first feature length film ‘Dovercourt House: a Home for Dance’ in 2021. This documentary contains nearly 30 interviews from the contemporary and social dance communities that consider this building to be their second home. My most recent film ‘The Toronto Contact Improvisation Community’ features origin stories from 8 dancers and won both the Gold Award and the Audience Choice Award at CDIFF in 2023.
