About this event

You're invited! Starting May 30th, join us at Suwa'lkh School in Coquitlam to support our learning programs by buying fresh, ultra-local produce grown, harvested, and sold by youth on schoolyard farms. In addition to freshly harvested produce like blueberries, garlic, beets, kale, carrots and more, there are canned and processed goods available for sale including jam, dried herbs, garlic powder, and sometimes even naturally dyed cloth napkins. Our markets are one of our key learning opportunities for SOYL youth to gain invaluable pre-employment skills with all proceeds going back to our programming, so come and say hello to the youth who steward the veggies you purchase on the site where it is grown!

Interested in joining our Coquitlam CSA program? There are still spots to sign up and receive a box of weekly seasonal veggies for 13 weeks for the entire market season. Learn more: https://freshroots.ca/product/veggie-box-csa-coquitlam/

About Fresh Roots

Our schoolyard farms are the fertile ground for both delicious food and powerful learning. We envision resilient, sustainable and equitable food systems which support human growth and connection. To bring that vision to life, we cultivate educational farms and place-based programs where youth develop healthy relationships with food, land and community through growing and sharing food that nourishes themselves, their communities and the planet! About the Suwa’lkh School Program

With 7 acres of forest and a salmon-bearing stream, fruit tree orchard, and food production farm, this little piece of heaven in the heart of commercial West Coquitlam hosts an alternative school for underserved urban youth and the Indigenous Education Department of SD43. Here we use First People’s Ways of Knowing and Being to teach our youth and create young leaders. Our programs include food production, weekly salad program, native plant propagation, forest restoration, weekly market, field trips, field classes, summer leadership program, and more!

VISION

Good Food For All! We envision a world where everyone has access to healthy food, land, and community.

MISSION

We cultivate engaging gardens and programs that catalyze healthy eating, ecological stewardship, and community celebration.

WHAT WE DO

We enact our mission through Schoolyard Market Gardens, educational farms we utilize as pathways to youth empowerment and employment. We facilitate outdoor experiential learning with teachers and students, mentor youth leaders through garden clubs and summer programming, host internships for high school aged youth fostering self-confidence, leadership and employment skills, and empower Vancouverites to grow their own food through our volunteer programs. All our food is sold into the school community; into cafeterias, food access programs, restaurants, and to our neighbours. We also work with other schools and organizations to develop their own market gardens and associated programming. We are a thought leader in institutional food systems change and outdoor experiential learning.

  • We believe that good, healthy food is a right for all people.
  • We believe that food is an inspiring and mobilizing force for good.
  • We believe that education is the first step towards positive personal and systems change.
  • We believe that healthy food systems are dependent upon a healthy environment and empowered communities.
  • We believe that how we work together is as important as the work we do.
  • We believe that collective action is imperative to food systems change.
