Introduction to Preventive Conservation

When: 9am-4pm, Sat-Sun, April 27-28, 2024

Where: Parish Office Annex, Basilica Block, 200 Military Rd, St. John's, NL. 2nd floor conference room. Entry is at the Parish Office door, in the laneway on the left (west/The Rooms) side of the Basilica, between the Basilica and the Pastoral Centre.

Instructor: Miki Lee, accredited conservator specializing in preventative conservation, member of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators, and Conservator at The Rooms, Archives and Collections Department.

About:

This 2-day course provides participants with a basic introduction to preventive conservation for museum collections. Participants will explore the nature of preventive conservation and the role of conservation in relation to other museum functions. Participants will be instructed on practical steps to preserve and minimize the physical deterioration of the museum’s collection. Related topics include: preventive conservation, conservation policy, handling and housekeeping, condition reporting, causes and prevention of deterioration, environmental controls, disaster planning and risk assessment, health and safety, security, storage, exhibitions and treatments .

This is one of the core courses for MANL's Museum Studies Certificate Program, but you do not have to be completing a certificate to take the course.

Tea and coffee will be provided. Lunch will not be provided. Participants may bring a lunch or leave at lunchtime.

Registration Fees:

$155 for non-members, plus an Eventbrite fee, for a total of $166.41.

Cancellations received less than 5 days in advance of the event are not eligible for refunds. Participants who do not attend remain responsible for full payment. In the event of bad weather, etc., the course will be rescheduled and refunds will be offered.

Travel funding:

Directions - Parish Office Annex, Basilica Block, 200 Military Rd, St. John's, NL. 2nd floor conference room. Entry is at the Parish Office door, in the laneway on the west/left side of the Basilica, between the Basilica and the Pastoral Centre.

There are 2 options for entering the building. #2 is recommended if stairs are an issue for you; and as an option to everyone on Sunday because parking in the front Basilica area will be busy.

#1. The main entrance to the Parish Office is in the short laneway on the left side of the Basilica. There are 5 steps to the door and it is marked with a white "Main Entrance" sign. There is parking in front of the building and in the Basilica lot. Once inside the building, you should see signs guiding the way to the 2nd floor conference room. There are stairs along the way.

#2. Turn off Bonaventure Avenue into the St. Bonaventure's College driveway, drive through the one-way masonry archway, park in that area, and use the rear entrance (white door) to the Parish Annex there. There is an elevator to the second floor. There are a couple of steps before the conference room, but fewer than with the #1 route. When you leave that rear parking lot at the end of the day, do not drive back through the arch. Exit at the back of the lot, turning left onto the one-way street, which will take you back towards Bonaventure Avenue.
