The news is out all over town: there are three bands playin’ underground. Montreal’s Kelly Elizabeth has come to share her craft in Toronto, with local support from Brock Mattson and Westelaken - three acts who humbly offer you their stories and songs. The folk and country tradition is a sturdy box, and the tunes these acts deliver will be draped loosely from that box like clothing set to dry: sometimes squarely within and often fluttering outside. Now and then a strong wind might even set a garment free entirely. Should be something interesting, should be something to see. Now you know where it’s happenin’. If you should go, you’ll win again.

About the artists

KELLY ELIZABETH is an indie folk project from Montreal. Her songs often start off alone in her room, or scrawled on pages of her diary, but they come to life when she brings them to her band. Inspired by the sounds of singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Adrianne Lenker, they’ve been performing together locally for over a year. Kelly’s EP “Half Moon” came out last October, and she’ll be bringing these songs to Ottawa and Toronto in summer 2024!

BROCK MATTSON is a singer-songwriter who creates smooth gentle sounds of sorrow. Having travelled across Canada majorly in their 20s, Brock now resides in the mouth of the St. Lawrence, on Prince Edward Island. "[Being] somewhat of a new and quite mysterious artist in the country world." - Flex Music Blog. They have two singles out to date, "Rather Be With You" and "Are You Thinking of Me." Both songs come from past experiences, where they’re mixed with traditional sounds of 60s country. Going forward, Mattsson hopes to share their songwriting to those whose love for country music still thrives.

WESTELAKEN embody the sweaty recklessness and intensity of Toronto’s hardcore punk movement through the prism of country music. They temper their rolling stabs of chaos with tenderness, playfulness, and introspection. At their simplest, the band is a tight and twangy alt-country quartet. But they’re also prone to letting their songs open up, and following their whims beyond the confines of structure and convention, like lines of text spilling off a page.
