The Night Owl and Dorland Music are thrilled to announce an inspiring night of music showcasing JUNO Award-winning saxophonist, vocalist and composer, Sundar Viswanathan. Sundar provides a stirring musical voyage that will captivate the audience.

Sundar Viswanathan, leader of both Avataar and Sundar Quartet, stands out as a JUNO-winning artist renowned in the realms of jazz and world music. He is hailed as one of Canada's most multifaceted talents and revered internationally as a musical ambassador and educator. A skilled composer and proficient across saxophone, bansuri, and vocals, Sundar's musical journey spans prestigious venues from 'Folk on the Rocks' in Yellowknife to the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, from 'Yoshi's' in San Francisco to the 'Blue Note Jazz Club' in New York City, and from the 'Awesome Africa Festival' in South Africa to the 'Rocking Walrus Festival' in Igloolik, Nunavut.

Born in India and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Sundar's earliest memories resonate with the rich tapestry of Indian classical, popular music, calypso, and Western influences including the Beatles, Harry Belafonte, and Jim Reeves. While popular music initially shaped his musical landscape, Sundar's affection for jazz and world music blossomed during his undergraduate studies.

Over the years, Sundar has honed his distinctive musical identity through collaborations with luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Kiran Ahluwalia, and Dave Douglas. His academic pursuits, spanning institutions like Humber College, Wilfrid Laurier University, New England Conservatory, and NYU, have enriched his understanding of jazz, classical, and world music.

Sundar's musical repertoire extends from innovative renditions of standard and popular tunes to boundary-pushing original compositions that blend world-jazz influences. Notable works include "Hope and Infinity" (2007) with Sundar's Induswest Project and the critically acclaimed "Petal" (2016) with the Avataar band, which earned a 2016 TD Special Projects award from the Toronto Jazz Festival. In 2021, Avataar's album "Worldview" garnered widespread acclaim, earning a spot among Jazz FM's '25 Best Jazz Albums of 2021' and clinching a 2022 JUNO for Jazz Album of The Year (Group).

Sundar is also an integral member and composer for the twice Juno-nominated world band, Jaffa Road. Their eclectic sound, blending Ladino, Indian, Jazz, and Roots music, has earned them accolades including a Canadian Folk Music Award and recognition from the John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Their third album, "Until When?", was released in October 2021.

Sundar's blend of confidence and humility, coupled with his remarkable technical prowess and expressive voice, solidifies his status as one of Canada's foremost live performers. For Sundar, music serves as a gateway to global collaboration and enlightenment, embodying his roles as performer, composer, and scholar.
