Our Make your own clothes course-is designed to introduce you to the great joy of designing your own, made-to-measure clothes !

We’ve created an 8 Module ( A to I ) self-paced course designed to give you all the necessary skills to create clothes. From sewing to cutting and transforming patterns , you will experiment all the necessary techniques to build a personal wardrobe. The Class is suitable for complete beginners or for the more seasoned makers that want to deepen their knowledge of garment making . You will leave each Class Module with a solid foundation to make your own clothes at home afterward .

Each module are in-depth workshop session delivered in person by accredited instructors to will deliver training suitable for professional of personal goals. Our small class setup ( maximum 5 students ) will allow you to get plenty of personalized instructions.


Module B will review all the basic knowledge you will need to sew a classic staple : the Buttoned shirt, using woven fabrics. We will focus on sewing adequately the main elements of Shirts: collar with stand, set-in sleeves with plackets , cuffs and more , while applying the best tips to make a beautifully crafted garment.


Here are the topics we will cover during the class : Sew darts / Sew cuff with placket / Make a classic Collar and stand / Sew a back yoke/ terminology of shirts/ Fabric sourcing and best shirting fabric choice


Techniques practiced : techniques to sew the main elements of a Shirt : the collar, sleeves and cuffs with plackets as well as box plate with buttons / Best tips to sew set-in sleeves / sew rounded hems/ Make a tab closure and sew Buttonhole with a home machine


Choose a shirt from suggested Pattern brands : MAE studio , Modern Sewing co, Jenna Shirt By Closet Core or pick your own pattern. ( see picture below )

We will recommend a choice of shirting fabric among : Fine cotton, Poplin, Twill, Linen, Flannel, Gabardine Cotton, Oxford Fabric, Pinpoint Fabric, Cotton Linen Madras or Dobby weave fabrics.

Note: Sewing a shirt is part of the project to include in your Portfolio for applications to Fashion University programs as well as the Vancouver Costume Union . Our course will teach you all the elements so you can sew a shirt following the required criterions of those institutions.

For example, you can make a classic button up shirt for the Kwantleen University Fashion Design and Technology program with

  • 2 pieces collar
  • center front buttons and buttonholes
  • set in sleeves with cuffs and plackets

Cécile Raizonville collaborate creatively with local textile and fashion brands. She graduated from LCI Fashion design program in Barcelona. She founded the womenswear Brand Matière Noire with two collaborators in Montréal which gained recognition at a national level. She moved to British Columbia in 2016 and has worked in the garment manufacturing industry since then. After offering consulting services for various brand in Vancouver, she officially launched MAE , a studio aiming at to bringing her experience and creativity at the service of the growth of a culture of sustainability in Fashion.
