Encaustic Fine Art Photo Workshop: Embracing Wabi Sabi Imperfections

Are you searching to infuse more visual interest into your work, seeking to create pieces that resonate deeply within you?

With my intuitive approach, infused with a wabi sabi twist that embraces imperfections, this workshop invites your heart to sing its own unique melody. Through this lens, your creations begin to tell stories. Inviting viewers to interpret through the lens of their own experiences.

In this transformative workshop, students merge photographic imagery with collage and encaustic painting, creating an alchemy of textures and impact. Each participant will undergo a personalized editing session, crafting a visual narrative and selecting images that harmonize best within their composition.

Guided by the principles of wabi sabi, we'll explore collage and encaustic painting techniques, fostering creativity that flows symbolically and intuitively. Delving into the rich history of encaustic painting, you'll uncover the versatility of working with wax.

You will discover techniques from layering, image transfers, embedding, and more. From the encaustic iron to mark-making tools, each element adds depth and dimension to your piece. Fabrics will serve as embossing elements, imparting richness to your composition.

Students will depart with a complete encaustic painting on a 8x8 wood panel and a sample board.

**What Is Encaustic?**

Encaustic, derived from the Greek "to heat or burn in," is a medium steeped in ancient tradition. Used by the Egyptians for their Fayum Mummy Portraits, its durability and timeless beauty endure. Impervious to moisture, beeswax serves as the foundation, offering transparency and adhesive qualities when combined with pigments.

**What You Will Learn:**

- Step-by-step techniques for underpainting, color, and composition.

- Integration of mixed media into your photos.

- embedding photos into warm wax.

- Creation of smooth or textured surfaces.

- Collage, gold leaf, silver leaf, bronze leaf, feathers, fibers, and threads in encaustic.

- Utilization of stylus and encaustic iron.

- Patina, dry rub, and stencil techniques.

- Small class size allows for personalized instruction.

**Beginners Welcome!**

Join us on this journey of discovery and creation. Find your voice in encaustic, where imperfections are celebrated, and stories are whispered from the heart.

About the Artist

Amanda Pierce

Amanda is an active published member of the International Encaustic Artists Association, a certified level 4 Powertex instructor and a member of the National Capital network of sculptors.

A native of Saskatchewan, Canada, Amanda Pierce  spent her childhood summers exploring and playing outside in nature.  With no television or phones to distract, her imagination introduced her to the world of art and her inherent ability to capture nature on canvas was born.  In the early years, this skill influenced by artists such as:  Charlene Stauffer and Betty Warnock.

Now residing in Ottawa, Canada, she has been mentored by phenomenal artists worldwide .  As an artist who thinks outside the box and believes we are all artists of the soul, Amanda has been honing and honoring her artistic gifts for over 20 years.   True to her Indigenous roots, Amanda derives her inspiration from nature.  Through encaustic and mixed mediums she captures the intensity, fluidity and texture of the natural world in her art.   This spontaneous medium where hot wax, resin and pigment meets wood panels, Amanda  intuitively manipulates color and texture to create luscious, magical works of art that allow the viewer to be lost in a meditative trance of infinite possibilities.
