The NCCEH eJournal Club is a series of informal hour-long sessions discussing and appraising articles relating to environmental health. Active participation is encouraged. Although these sessions are directed at public health inspectors, anyone interested in a given topic is more than welcome to take part.

Title of paper: A medical-toxicological view of tattooing (Laux et al., 2016)

Questions to consider:

  • Have you, or a colleague, inspected a personal service establishment that offers tattooing? If so, are you aware of provincial legislation or municipal by-laws that cover this practice?
  • What kinds of adverse effects or complications related to tattooing or tattoo removal have you encountered professionally?
  • What are some other types of tattooing, and their potential health risks, that are not covered in this review?
