About this event

  • 1 hour

Unconscious bias and vicarious trauma experienced by social workers can erode ethical practice if these factors are not addressed with careful intent. The new national code of ethics developed by the Canadian Association of Social Workers is also in the process of being adapted for the Nova Scotian context, to help ensure safe(r) social work practice in our province. Join Naj Siritsky, MSW RSW, as they discuss all of this, and explore how it has informed the development of NSCSW’s professional development guidelines.

This lunch and learn will serve as the introduction to an upcoming series of professional development activities designed to help us begin to reflect upon the concept of “safe” social work practice, and how our own intersectional positionality and experiences can impact how we practice. How do we bring ourselves into our work and how does our work affect us? How do we support those who are different from us, and how do we reflect upon these experiences in ways that help us to continue to grow in our own learning and unlearning journey?

Eligibility

There are no prerequisites for this session. You'll need a device that can use Zoom, and a reasonably reliable internet connection. There are two ticket classes:

NSCSW members

All active, associate, retired associate, and student members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are welcome to attend; our professional development programming is part of our member services funded by annual registration fees

Partners

We are proud to be part of the Canadian Association of Social Workers, the Canadian Council of Social Work Regulators, and the Nova Scotia Regulated Health Professions Network. Community members enrolled in any of our partners' member organizations are eligible to purchase a partner ticket; just let us know which one you're part of when you sign up.

Professional development tracking

For members of NSCSW, participating in this event is eligible to fulfill the mandatory requirement for formal professional development, and use the registration confirmation email or PDF ticket as a verification document.

Participants may also choose to follow up after the session to participate in advocacy related to the session's content; such advocacy activities are eligible for the mandated requirements for all social workers in Nova Scotia to complete annual training or activities related to the pursuit of social justice.
