About this event

Students are often looking for time at the forge to play and work on their own ideas. Open Forge Days are an opportunity for you to do just that, and are only available to students who have previously taken a course with us.

What is it?
Open Forge is 1 day long (8 hours), and will take place a few times throughout the year. It is independent, self-directed time - an opportunity for you to make the things you want, experiment, and practice existing skills at your own pace. We will be around, but there will not be any official instruction, and therefore no time spent watching demos, meaning more practice time for you.

As you know from working here before, at your forging station you are provided your own set of tools (tongs, hammers, fire rakes, etc.) and your own anvil – this will all be available to you during Open Forge. You are of course welcome to bring your own tools in addition. We do ask that all tools and projects are taken home in between Open Forge days to keep your stuff safe and the shop clear.

Power tool access will include the band saw and belt sander, but specifically not angle grinders or the TIG welder as the focus is on hand forging techniques rather than metal fabrication.

- A forging course at Two Smiths
