Oral Language Foundations for Teachers of Multi-Language Learners (MLL):

Using the Strive-for-Five FrameworkTM to develop the foundational skills required for reading and writing proficiency

“Developing oral language through daily conversations is essential for language

comprehension and, eventually, reading comprehension.” (Catts & Petscher, 2022,

National Early Literacy Panel, 2008). In this workshop, Kim Lockhart, an experienced

Second Language classroom teacher in Kingston, Ontario, will share highlights from the

abundance of research on oral language comprehension and its correlation with reading

comprehension and writing proficiency. Kim will describe the Strive-for-Five framework,

a model developed by Dr. Sonia Cabell and Dr. Tricia Zucker, and explain how she uses

structured conversations to advance the language skills of her second language

learners. All attending participants will be entered for a draw to win a copy of

Scholastic’s new “Strive-For-Five” book! Register to win!!!
