Description

Taking action on social determinants to reduce inequities: the public health/health care interface

Although public health has long played a role in tackling the social determinants of health, interest is growing rapidly within health service organizations. This interest is driven in part by a greater awareness of the relationship between social deprivation and health service use, and that social determinants are likely at the root of inequities in health. Existing research is focused on evaluating interventions in clinical spaces. Dr. Pinto will explore the potential for collaboration between public health and health care services. Work in this area can build on “Patients First” and increasing contact between local public health and Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs).

Presenter: Dr. Andrew Pinto

Dr. Andrew Pinto is a Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialist and family physician at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is a Scientist in the Centre for Urban Health Solutions, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and in the Division of Clinical Public Health, Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Dr. Pinto leads The Upstream Lab, focused on evaluating interventions that address social determinants.
