Join us for a comprehensive introduction to safe canning where you'll learn the essentials of preserving fresh produce! Canning at home is a popular practise for preserving garden bounty and other foods for long-term, shelf-stable storage. New research and discoveries in food safety show us that safe canning is a greater science than simply sealing food in jars. Join us at the GFB for a comprehensive introduction to safe canning where you'll learn the essentials of preserving fresh produce and more! This hands-on session in the Civic Center Kitchen covers key techniques such as water bath and pressure canning, safety practices, and essential equipment. You'll gain practical experience and valuable tips for creating delicious, homemade preserves that last.

Liz Lavin is the GFB Program Coordinator, with a passion for both growing food and preserving it for long-term storage. She will teach you the must-knows of safe, science-based canning, and share how she uses canning to not only preserve in-season, homegrown produce, but also prepare delicious, home-cooked convenience meals to help feed her family on those busy days.

What to bring: Water and a snack. Please have long hair tied back, and wear clothing suitable for being in a commercial kitchen. We will be handling food so please remove hand jewellery and false nails.

Registration: Pre-registration is required, as our group will be limited to 12 participants to ensure everyone has the chance to ask questions and learn by doing. You are welcome to register your children, provided they are accompanied by an adult and able to listen to the instruction reasonably well. There will be hazards such as sharp knives and boiling water, children must be supervised at all times.

Cost: This workshop is meant to make food preservation accessible, with a free ticket option for anyone who would benefit! Tickets by donation are also available for those who are able. All proceeds go back to the ongoing delivery of our programs.
