Our two-day seminar will explore how colonial laws replaced sovereignty with dependency.

Participants will feel empowered to make the change from relying on colonial laws to applying their community's traditional laws to self-govern and self-administer their governments and Nations.

DAY 1:

Topics to be discussed:

  • How colonial laws and legal processes have created a relationship of dependency between First Nations and Canadian government and limited the sovereignty of First
  • Nations,
  • The social, economic, political, and legal implications of First Nations dependency on colonial laws and the challenges in making progress under the status quo.
  • What it means to be sovereign Nations including rights and obligations.
  • Methods and key considerations for decolonizing legal frameworks; and,
  • Case studies of effective First Nations law development.

DAY 2:

Participants will explore First Nations law-making:

  • Understanding the ability of First Nations to develop their own laws and the challenges and barriers that come with enacting laws.
  • Explore & identify fundamental changes that need to be made to have successful legal processes.
  • What initial steps can be taken to begin the process of converting your laws.
  • Explore the processes involved in transforming laws and understanding that these Nations do not need to start from scratch.
  • Learn how to incorporate best practices from other nations around the world, and the benefits of this strategy.
