YOU AND I ≠ WE // (UNHINGED 19+) - JUNE 7th

For two nights and for the first time at The Birdhouse get ready for YOU AND I ≠ WE performed by SKIM (he/him) and Maiden China (she/they).

In this experimental show Maiden China and SKIM explore the weight of representation, the complexities and intersections of gender, race, and sexuality, and what it means to be in their bodies in public and private spheres. The performance shares insights into vulnerable experiences and gestures of refusal in being consumed by the audience’s gaze. SKIM and Maiden China push the boundaries of mediums through sharing their own narratives and intersecting drag with theatre, mixed with care, play and performance art.

Q - What’s the difference between the All Ages show on Thursday May 30th and UNHINGED show on Friday June 7th?

A - The All Ages show on May 30th is the scripted version of the show that Maiden China and SKIM has performed and wrote for themselves to share. It is the original work that they have worked on for over two years.

The UNHINGED version is Maiden China and SKIM using the script as a guide but giving themselves room to play and improvise. Get ready for a chaotic ride of inside jokes, playful and 19+ appropriate behaviour. Getting a ticket to the UNHINGED version includes entry to FlirT, a BIPOC T4T dance party after the show!

The process of writing this show was started in 2022 by Kendell Yan and Romi Kim. It was first presented as a work in progress by Upintheairtheatre in 2023 and the latest iteration was performed in Victoria at Outonstages and in Toronto at the University of Toronto.

19+ event; two pieces of government-issued ID are required for entry.The Birdhouse accepts cash and card payments via Square. There are ATMs inside the venue.

Sound sensitivity note: there will be loud music at this event. Foam ear plugs can be requested from venue staff if needed.Light sensitivity note: flashing and moving lights at this event. Entrance is ground level, through double doors with 61" wide clearance.Washrooms are all genders.
