Overview

Join us for part two of this engaging short filmmaking workshop led by actor and filmmaker Jonathan Watton.

Join us for an engaging two-part short filmmaking workshop led by actor and filmmaker Jonathan Watton. A graduate of Grenfell’s Fine Arts program and the Canadian Film Centre’s directing program, Jonathan brings 30 years of experience in the film and TV industry to his filmmaking practice. His award-winning short films have screened at festivals around the world. Drawing on both his struggles and successes in creating short-format material, he shares valuable insights to help you navigate your filmmaking journey.

This workshop will guide you through every step of the process, from conceptualizing your story to shooting and editing your short film. Learn essential skills, collaborate with fellow filmmakers, and connect with members of the local artistic community, all while bringing your unique vision to life on screen. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your ideas and grow as a filmmaker!

Part 2: Script to Screen – A guide to making your own short film

Participants will learn to transform elements of their scripts from page to screen, covering all key stages of film production, from development to distribution. Emphasizing collaboration, directing fundamentals, and production planning, the workshop provides insights into how words and scenes translate visually and how to navigate the challenges of low-budget filmmaking. Participants will also explore various aesthetic approaches to storytelling, including the principles of Dogme95/25. By the end, they will gain practical experience in self-producing, grasp post-production techniques, and develop strategies for reaching an audience, all while enhancing their understanding of genuine storytelling that prioritizes the human experience of filmmaking.
