Debajehmujig Storytellers
Debajehmujig Storytellers — formally known as the Debajehmujig Theatre Group — is a First Nations theatre and multi arts organization based in the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario. Founded in 1984, Debajehmujig is recognized as one of the longest running Indigenous theatre organizations in North America, dedicated to sharing authentic Indigenous stories through performance, arts creation, and cultural education.
Rooted in the Anishnaabe principles of storytelling, the organization creates original theatre and multi arts productions that represent Indigenous worldviews, histories, and living cultural practices. We aim to vitalize Anishnaabe culture, language, and heritage through creativity, community engagement, and intergenerational storytelling.
Debajehmujig operates both from their home territory in Wiikwemkoong and the Debajehmujig Creation Centre in Assiginack, our cultural hub supporting the theatre creation, visual arts, recording, podcasting, workshops, and artist development. Our performances take place locally—and have included at the iconic open air stage in the historic Holy Cross Mission ruins in Wiikwemkoong—and across Canada through outreach programs.
As the only professional theatre company located on a reserve, Debajehmujig represents a vital voice in Indigenous storytelling, cultural revitalization, and community centered artistic expression. Our events and programming celebrate Indigenous resilience, creativity, and connection, inviting audiences to experience stories that have traveled across generations, and for both Anishinaabe and non-Anishinaabe audiences.
