Section 1 is a Canadian registered charity dedicated to defending liberal democracy through civic education. Our conviction is simple: democracy doesn't defend itself. It depends on engaged, vigilant citizens—what we call Heroic Citizens—willing to steward the freedoms that laws and institutions alone cannot protect.

We convene conferences with leading scholars and thinkers, develop civics education for schools, and publish research and commentary aimed at strengthening democratic culture and resisting democratic backsliding. Our events bring citizens, students, and experts together for urgent, substantive conversations on the health of our democracy and what it takes to protect it.
