Social workers in Nova Scotia are invited to join your colleagues from across the province to connect, network, organize &amp; share resources.

Vicarious trauma & secondary stress

Members of the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers are required to complete annual professional development, which must include training or activities related to preventing and managing vicarious trauma and secondary stress.

<p>Communities of practice are wonderful opportunities for like-minded practitioners, or professionals engaged in similar areas of practice, to be able to gather together and share ideas and best practices. They are an opportunity for networking, fellowship, resource sharing, and advocacy development. They can also help reduce burnout by reminding us that we are not alone, but rather part of a larger whole.</p><p>Get together with your colleagues to talk about what matters to you and build your professional network! Based on feedback from past sessions, breakout discussion groups are planned as follows:</p><ul><li>Housing &amp; poverty</li><li>Decolonizing ourselves</li><li>Clinical social work</li><li>French speakers conversation</li></ul><p>Other topics may be added by request.</p><p><br></p><h2>Eligibility</h2><p>There are no prerequisites for this session. You'll need a device that can use <a href="https://zoom.us/test" title="https://zoom.us/test" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zoom</a>, and a reasonably reliable internet connection. There are two ticket classes:</p><p><br></p><h3>NSCSW members</h3><p>All active, associate, retired associate, and student members of the <a href="https://nscsw.org/" title="https://nscsw.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nova Scotia College of Social Workers</a> are encouraged to attend.</p><p><br></p><h3>Non-members</h3><p>While these gatherings are centred on social work practice in Nova Scotia, inviting our colleagues to join us can enrich our conversations. Non-member tickets are therefore open to social workers across Canada, as well as to members of any other regulated professions who regularly collaborate with social workers.</p><p><br></p><h2>Tracking professional development</h2><p>This one hour session is eligible to help members of NSCSW complete part of their annual regulatory requirement for professional development activities or training to increase <strong><strong>resilience to vicarious trauma and secondary stress</strong></strong>. Members who have already completed that requirement for this year can choose to track it as an <strong><strong>informal</strong></strong> learning activity instead.</p><p>Participants may also choose to follow up after this gathering to pursue further collaboration with their colleagues that might be eligible for other professional development categories. For example:</p><ul><li>developing an advocacy campaign could be a social justice or volunteer activity</li><li>co-creating a best practice resource could be a formal knowledge transfer activity</li><li>organizing a peer support group could also meet the requirement for activities that increase resilience to vicarious trauma and secondary stress</li><li>forming a peer supervision group could be eligible for the supervision/consultation subcategory of informal activities</li></ul><p>This examples are not exhaustive, so we encourage our members to explore and invent other opportunities relevant to their practice and their community.
